My first mount
« on: February 27, 2010, 07:00:13 PM »
I finally made the nicer of the two gemsbok skull & horns we found into a european mount.  I used a cheap kit from Academy and it took some whittling to make it work but I'm please with the result.

Those are about 36" horns, rather small for gemsbok.  I understand they're quite good at using them for skewering lions that mess with their young.

Very nice indeed!

Looks good!!  I have seen pics from the white sands missile range  in New Mexico where they have Gems buck that were brought in to eat the weeds and stuff   Well anyway  one of them had a yote  half down one of her horns  most likely tried to eat her young one and paid the price...  They say not many eve get taken by predators there  and after seein that pic  i can believe it !!  Sixty gemsbuck were released in the 1940’s. They are now well established in the area, numbering over 6,000 animals and you can put in for a draw to hunt them. Not to expensive from what i have read .....

I can believe the yote story.  They (yotes) probably have gotten complacent since they haven't seen anything that would fight back since the buff were gone & replaced with (relatively) docile cattle.  I know the gemsbok are great about getting by on almost no water & do much better in dry areas than other critters.
