Oh by the way, I am now trying out a new Hornady custom factory load, the 300 grain Evolution bullet and cartridge.

Wow what a hot load!!!

The ballistics when shooting out of an 8 3/4" barrel are:
2050 fps at the muzzle
1861 fps at 50 yards
1650 fps at 100 yards

I need to run some calculations for the 20" barrel, but I am guessing it is pushing about 2400 fps at the muzzle, maybe more!!!

I am not seeing a fire ball when shooting, so that means that load is doing a complete powder burn in the added length of the 20" barrel, which equates to maximum pressure and velocity for that load.

With the hand cannon I always see a huge fire ball out the end of the barrel, which means that cartridge is not getting a complete burn time in the shorter hand gun barrel.

I have no idea what the internal pressure is in the new Thompson, the cartridge is definately burned and discolored up around the front end of the casing, but there are no cracks or bulging going on at all, and the primer is still seated and not loose in the casing, which are good signs.

I love that evolution bullet.  It cut  the rainbow out out of my 45-70 trajectory by about half.

We were also thinking the same thoughts Geno, maybe the slamming into my face and head played into the scope bending/bulging issue.   The first scope had two bends/bulge spots on the rear bottom portion of the scope tube and one bend/bulge spot up on the front bottom of the scope tube.   The front bend/bulge is puzzling though!

We torn down the scope rings and base this afternoon and found the second scope is now trashed as well.   There is a bend/buldge on the bottom rear and another bend/bulge on the front bottom of the that scope as well and both ring mounts are leaning forward, which follows the bend/bulges in the scope.

Freaken Wild!!!

Never saw anything like this happen before!!!

The entire gun is going back to Thompson Center and we have asked them to get involved and do some testing as well to help figure this one out, and to specify to us what scope base, rings and scope we should be using!!!

That Evolution bullet looks like it will be a real good hard hitter for sure!

What are the ballistics of your 45-70 shooting the Hornady Evolution bullet?

Oh by the way, that evolution bullet from Hornady is not yet available for sale for reloaders yet.

Evidentally they are consuming most all of their own stock of those bullets for their own custom cartidge loads that they are making and selling.

my guess is that its to much gun for the scope..need some heavy duty shock resistant optics

Thanks for the link to the article Geno!!!

I focused on two key items they mentioned in the article, and that was they used the T/C scope mounting rail and T/C rings, both are made of steel not aluminum.   The scope mount rail that my gun shop put on the gun was a Weaver aluminum rail, and that is probably the problem.  The scope rail hangs out over the taper of the barrel by about one inch or so in front, and if you use an aluminum rail it is going to flex more than a steel mount will.

Latest update on the continued new rifle saga!!!

My gun shop had told me that Thompson Center will be replacing the barrel with a new one that is supposed to be QC verified to have the scope mount surface properly machined and aligned to the bore, and the barrel crown will also be machined square.

Thompson Center is equally baffled by the scope mounts and rifle recoil bending and bulging the scope tube front and rear.   They saying that the aluminum or the steel scope base mount should both work fine with the rifle.

It appears that they may have to actually do some of their own testing and specify the minimum proper set up.

I am going with a steel scope base because I know it will not flex or deflect as much and an aluminum base would, particularly when it over hangs the barrel.

We asked them if they would anty up and cover the cost of the two trashed scopes, and they said they would discuss it and get back with us on it.

Hey Grizz, or Hammer, or Russ, can you fellows move this thread over to the archicve or game pole and stringer catagory, so that this information can be saved and not lost in the bit bucket?

We finally heard back from Thompson Center regarding my S&W 50 cal., it turns out that the barrel locking bolt was out of tolerance by about 1/64 of an inch.   The locking bolt area is a machined recessed area located at the bottom side of the barrel, that has a large hardened pin press fit into the pocket area, which when engaged with the locking mechanism with the barrel closed, allows the barrel to positively lock into place and close up precisely for shooting.   With the position of the locking bolt being 1/64 of an inch out of tolerance, it caused the bore of the barrel to be off many times more down range at the target, which explains is why they had to shim the scope mount to to bring it down on the target.

In any event the factory figured it out and has replaced the entire barrel assembly with a known dimentionally acurate one, and they did say they would anti up some funds to cover one of the trashed scopes.

Now our next step is to go to a steel scope base mounting pad, too further reduce the amount of flex in the base itself, versus an aluminum base.   This should solve that issue along with having a scope base that is rock solid and flat mounted with no shims under the base.

We will go with the same type and brand of scope as before and add some friction material in between the scope and rings, to eliminate the scope form sliding back and forth in the ring mounts.   We will probably stay with the tactical ring mounts though.

I am confident that we will get this thing resolved and set up correctly this time around, the recoil is no worse than my 12 gage slug gun in camparison, and there is no elaborate scope set up on that gun.

We will probably have it ready for range testing ocne again in week or two, so I will update this thread after the range test has been done!!!

Glad they are fixing you up and glad to hear TC is good to deal with.  Ive got several of their products.  Most are pretty good stuff.
